All the trappings

I’ve got a house (and a mortgage.) I’ve got a wife. I’ve got homeowner’s insurance, life insurance, and a retirement plan. Today, I turned 37. And last Sunday, I bought a really big ladder, so I could clean my gutters. It’s now stored in my garage.

I’m reasonably certain I’m a grown-up now.

Yes, but have you said: "Turn down that noise! Do you call that music?" That's when you're truly a grown-up.

Cool ladder. My father never had anything like that.

In my book, you're grown-up if you're living away from your parents and paying your own bills. All the rest is just... stuff. Some folks have them and some don't.

And I started saying "Turn down that noise!" when Nirvana first hit the airwaves.

I like Nirvana. I officially feel less square than thou.

I have that ladder, too. I've stopped cleaning my own gutters, though. I did it myself for years, but the last time I did it, I thought, "Yikes, a fall from here would probably be fatal." (My house is on a sloping lot, and there's a side where the gutters are quite high off the ground.) Now I pay someone to do it. Sigh.

Happy birthday! I hope I am as cool as you are when I am 37.

I have a magazine rack/basket. That's what really did it for me.

Happy Birthday, Zed! Best wishes.

=v= So your mind is in the gutter, you're talking about how big something is, and you consider this a sign of maturity? Huh. Huh-huh-huh.

Happy Birthday, Zed!

You are not too old unless lighting the candles in the cake becomes a problem in logistics / safety.

Which might be right about now :)
