Sleep

Circadiana is a kick-ass new weblog about sleep, by a sleep researcher. See, for instance, Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sleep.

I’m a morning person. I first learned this at grad school, thinking I’d only failed to realize it because I’d never really tried it as an undergrad. The above article alerted me to the likelihood that I wasn’t a morning person yet as an undergrad.

Whoa! That article just confirmed all the theories about sleep that I've come up with from years of self-observation. Night people and morning people are that way because their circadian cycles are longer or shorter than 24 hours -- check, there's a genetic basis for it. Your sleep patterns can shift from late sleeper to early riser as you age -- yup, happened to me when I was 27. And waking up in the middle of the night... I've been thinking there was something wrong with my sleeping for many years because of this, but turns out it's the natural pattern. Oh, and alcohol causes your sleep to be of low quality. Sure experienced that one enough.

Nice to know there's actual research being done on all this.
