You know, I didn’t used to think that evil consisted of particular people rolling out of bed every morning, looking at themselves in the mirror, crying out Yar har har, what eeeeeeeevile thing shall I do today, and then setting forth with a spring in their step. I’d like to thank Tom DeLay’s Republican Party for convincing me otherwise.

Stuff that actually explains why things happen are actually useful, he added incidentally. One learns from following reading and explanations and facts. The other "explanation" simply hurts people's ability to understand reality.
I choose helping to understand reality. I fight against the reductionist views that fight us.

I took PNH's claim to have been convinced of the eeeeeeeeevile hypothesis as hyperbole (and I found it to be an entertaining instance of hyperbole.) I agree with you that it would be counter-productive to really believe.
