Changes

When I began blogging, I had the idea that I was competing with other blogs to scoop stories. I'd scour the web looking for things, trying to get to them before other blogs. I'd scoff when something I'd already seen showed up elsewhere. "Ha! That is so three days ago." I looked at blogdex and daypop to see what not to post because it'd been overdone elsewhere.

Had brunch with my friend Zvi a few weeks ago. "How come I'm finding it so easy to get up every morning and spend time on my blog, but I've never done that with my writing?" I said.

I intended the question rhetorically, but he suggested an answer: "Instant gratification." That the difference was the real-time feedback from readers and other bloggers. As opposed to writing fiction which requires days of effort before it's ready to show to anyone, and of which any given piece may never actually find publication.

And he was right. And y'know, looking honestly at my priorities, I'd rather be putting my energy into my fiction and other things. Other people, featured prominently on my links list, are already doing the links and commentary biz better than I'm interested in making the time to do. Read them if that's what you want — I'll continue to do so.

I'm not ceasing to blog. I'm merging Death Upon My Shoulder into MemeMachineGo! Going forward, most of what I post will be more similar to what I've posted there than previously on MMG! I'll still share links and comment on the world at large when I feel like it, but it'll be because I feel like it — I won't be seeking it out to have something to say. (I also won't worry about redundancy.)

Basically, that's what I'll be doing in general: writing what I feel like, when I feel like it, because it's captured my interest of the moment, without concern for the tastes of my imagined or actual audience. Stick around if you're still having fun; so long and thanks for all the hits otherwise.

Comments

I'll still be here. Your journal is on my daily read list, whether it's a list of links or pithy commentary about creativity. Good show!

How's that for instant gratification?
